The socio-environmental quality of the open spaces of slums: a study and proposal with reference to the city of São Paulo

Abstract

The slums are, at the Brazil of the twentieth century, a reality consolidated that must be, emphatically, subject of critical studies and design, both for their deficiencies, and by its characteristics to be optimized.The system of open spaces of the slums, as well as the rest of the urban network, plays a unique role in promoting urban living, mobility, leisure, income generation and environmental comfort, in and out.This research seeks to, therefore, investigate and experience how it could contribute to the environmental quality of the slum landscape, public and semi-public, in order to enforce its true economic, social and environmental function, with urban interventions configured to be a honest answer to people, place, time and weather.
