Influence on W-3 index to oxidize LDL, inflammation and body composition in women with breast cancer

Abstract

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide and the most common among women. Although the associated causes are multiple and complex, it is known that during the development of breast cancer, several regulatory mechanisms aren't in balance, while processes such as chronic inflammation and pro-oxidative reactions are stimulated. From this perspective, some studies suggest that some environmental risk factors can be modified. Of these, great emphasis has been directed to the diet and, particularly, the profile of fat consumed. In recent years, has been proposed that omega 3 fatty acids (w-3) could modulate tumor growth, promoting the prevention and control of câncer.Based on these points, the objective of this study is to evaluate whether the index w-3, used as a biomarker of past consumption, influences the inflammatory and oxidative processes and body composition of women with breast cancer. These patients will be selected at the Mastology service of the General Hospital of Fortaleza, Ceará. After complete clinical and social characterization, anthropometric variables (weight, height, BMI and waist circumference) and body composition (fat mass and lean mass) by bioelectrical impedance will be evaluated. The content of plasma fatty acids and n-3 ratio will be determined by HPLCusing external standards. The index w-3 will be from the extraction of fatty acids in erythrocyte membranes. With the completion of this study is expected to show that women with breast cancer who have a higher content of n-3 ratio will haveless oxidized LDL particles, lower concentrations of inflammatory markers and a lower percentage of fat mass. Thus, it is believed that these women can get a better clinical prognosis. (AU)
