The aquatic macroinvertebrates are recognized as a reliable tool for biomonitoring of water quality and are used in environmental monitoring programs in several countries. In Brazil, some government agencies also use this instrument to monitoring the quality of continental waters. The environmental assessment using aquatic macroinvertebrates is done by comparing metric values among the communities of impacted areas and reference conditions, where there is biodiversity in the absence of human impacts. The reference conditions have a regional scope and can be applied only to the area in which the monitoring is developed, so in general this applies to ecoregions or river basins. The CETESB, in the State of São Paulo, developed a methodology of biomonitoring with macroinvertebrates to reserviours and large rivers, but to monitoring the low-order streams the State still lacks studies to create a specific methodology. In one of the few studies conducted in low-order streams in São Paulo, Suriano (2008) characterized reference conditions for streams within Atlantic Forest areas. In the Cerrado, another domain of great importance and extent in the state, there are no studies about reference conditions. In view of these gaps is inserted this proposed studie. For that are being conducted samples of environmental data and macroinvertebrates in several streams in protected areas and impacted in the Cerrado. This work aims to characterize and analyze the diversity of aquatic macroinvertebrates in low order streams within different land uses and degrees of anthropogenic alteration in Cerrado areas. The results of this project will serve as input for environmental monitoring programs that involve the Cerrado ecoregion of São Paulo.
