Abstract

The transformation of lifestyle today, especially with regard to improper eating habits and sedentary lifestyles have led to a framework of increasing obesity worldwide. Thus, the measures for obesity treatment available area related to nutrition care, regular physical activity, changing behavior, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery, which have been increasingly broad indications and depending factors related to the patients. The dentistry can contribute to acting in the etiology of obesity, addressing the oral problems, like dental caries, periodontal disease, salivary flow, and especially the teeth loss, which could influence the process of weight gain. Oral rehabilitation is replaced by character relevant to the success of treatment for weight reduction. When the chewing efficiency decreased because of the absence of teeth, may predispose the individual to consume foods with lower caloric density and higher amount. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the masticatory muscle function and capacity of obese patients indicate for bariatric surgery in order to promote a dental analyzing monitoring functions that may change over the pre and postoperatively, and seeking to provide well-being and better adaptations to new conditions. The sample consists of 100 obese patients indicated to bariatric surgery and with need of prosthetic treatments and 30 patients without prosthetic treatments needs, as control group. The methods used are: Muscular assessment - Algometry (pressure pain threshold - LDP) Visual Analysis Scale (VAS) Masticatory efficiency and capacity; Oral rehabilitation and preparation of mouth and quality of life. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey test for individual comparisons will be applied with 95% confidence interval (p <0.050). The results are able to highlight if the some alteration in of the stomatognathic system function of patients undergoing bariatric surgery and for these changes may identified early and prevented.
