Validation of functional movement and outcomes in musculoskeletal disorders of the hand

Abstract

Musculoskeletal system provides coordinated movements. Their components are interdependent and motor-sensory integrity is fundamental for an efficient joint stability and in special, the upper extremity has structures that are responsible for performing daily life activities, especially dependent of the wrist and hand. It is well defined that musculoskeletal assessment is the basis for any therapeutic intervention after traumatic lesions or dysfunctions of the hand and upper extremity. This Pos doctoral project aims to provide an opportunity for improving research skills in learning new clinical and research assessment techniques for evaluating joint function and its relationship to pain and disability of the musculoskeletal system with a particular emphasis on the upper limb-including both self-report and performance-based measures. So, the proposal of this project is to validate PRWHE questionnaire for bone and joint disorders (fractures), tendon and nerve lesions in the hand in a specific population and conduct a systematic review evaluating the quality and content of research evidence on instruments for evaluating neuromuscular status after nerve repair. It could be developed in MacMaster University with Dr. Joy MacDermid as the supervisor. This University is an important Clinical Research Center and birth of teaching evidence-based practice. (AU)
