The use of antibiotic growth promoters in poultry diets has contributed markedly to the improvement of production indices of the sector worldwide. However, its continued use in the diet for decades, brought the emergence of bacteria resistant to antibiotic, residues in poultry products and the environment and imbalance of normal microflora of birds. Among the possible alternatives to the issue, the use of probiotics and essential oils has shown positive results, such as modulation of intestinal microbiota, improving intestinal health, digestibility and bird performance. However, some trials have reported limited effects, or even conflicting for both products. Thus, the study of responses performed by these additives in the molecular processes related to digestion and absorption of the birds can contribute to improved utilization in the animal diet. Based on these, this paper proposes to assess the effects of adding Bacillus subtilis (probiotic), a commercial mixture of essential oils or a combination of both in performance, the activity of intestinal digestive enzymes (aminopeptidase, maltase and sucrase) and ATPase Na + / K +, and the expression of some key genes related to digestion processes [aminopeptidase N (APN), isomaltase sucrase (SI), maltase glucoamylase (MGA)] and absorption of nutrients [carrier intestinal peptide 1 (PEPT1) , galactose and glucose transporter 1 Na + dependent (SGLT-1), glucose transporter, galactose and fructose independent of Na + 2 (GLUT-2) ATP ase and Na + / K +] in broilers.
