Abstract

There are 85 valid specific names of Crenicichla, the most species rich cichlid genus in South America, and 7 names of Teleocichla.A monophyletic group including the species of Crenicichla and Teleocichla has been widely corroborated by phylogenetic analyses using molecular and morphological data. The relationships among the species of these genera, however, are still obscure. We propose herein a phylogenetic analysis based on morphological data to test the monophily of these genera and to investigate the relationships among the species, with the purpose of defining supra-especific groups. Once the limits of each genus and of the subgroups are defined, taxonomic revisions could be done in a more appropriate way. Additionally, this project is an opportunity to integrate morphological data with ecomorphological and behavioural information available.
