Recent studies of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (BIGS) show increase of the overweight and obesity in Brazil. In this context, the high prevalence of overweight and obesity in women of childbearing age appears to be associated with consumption of high fat diets. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the consequences of this maternal nutrition during periods of pregnancy and/or lactation on brain development of their offspring. Previous investigations suggest that maternal obesity or maternal exposure to obesogenic diets (eg. high fat diets) may permanently alter brain structure and function of the offspring, possibly generating morphofunctional changes. Moreover, studies have also shown that the use of high-fat diet during critical periods of brain development (pre- and/or postnatal) could modulate persistent effects on neurotransmitter systems, such as serotoninergic and dopaminergic, leading to increased incidence of neurobehavioral disorders. Therefore, this research project will investigate the performance of the adult offspring of female rats submitted to high fat diet pre-or postnatal, in experimental models of depression (forced swimming) anxiety (plus maze) and aggressiveness (foot-shock).
