Due to its wide range of application - pulp and paper production, construction or use in energy generation - eucalyptus is one of the most important crops of the country, generating millions of direct and indirect jobs and moving important part of the national GDP with its various derivatives. However, as with many others exotic species planted on a large scale, the eucalyptus, specially the Eucalyptus grandis species and its hybrids, are infected by native pathogens, of which the most important is the rust fungus, Puccinia psidii, that attacks clonal gardens and nursery seedlings up to two years old, causing losses of up to 35% of timber volume in plantations in the state of São Paulo. Despite the contribution of plant breeding programs, the E. grandis X P. psidii pathosystem is still poorly described in the molecular level, with few studies about processes and molecules that confer resistance to the plants. Therefore the plant breeding programs still produce plants with ephemeral resistance to the fungus, with the constant emergence of new virulent pathogen strains. Thus, in order to better understand the E. grandis X P. psidii relationship, this project aims to study the protein and metabolite succession that occurs on leaf tissues of resistant and susceptible plants infected by the pathogen, with the aid of the liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry technique. The results may help to elucidate which proteins and metabolites promote the activation of the defense system of the plant during the resistance process, highlighting elements that can be used in marker assisted breeding and plant genetic transformation.
