Visualization and analysis of the lung movement from temporal sequences of images from magnetic resonance and computerized tomography

Abstract

Due to the impossibility to see the actual movements of the lung, the visualization of its motion is a current topic of research in medicine. Lung motion modeling is a subject of great importance in several clinical applications. For example, in the treatment of lung and liver cancers, lung motion is used to make the radiotherapy planning. This project is being conducted in partnership with the team of Prof. Dr. Toshiyuki Gotoh, Yokohama National University (YNU), Japan. We obtained authorization from the medical ethics committee to receive data from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The techniques developed by the Japanese team related to COPD may be transferred to our group. I went to Japan in 2005 with a MEXT scholarship. In the last five years, the coordinator of the Japanese team and a researcher of the Japanese group were in EPUSP (support from FAPESP and CNPq). We already published together 13 articles in Congress and two articles in international journals. (AU)
