Abstract

Wireless sensor networks are an emerging technology, that have potential applications in tactical surveillance, environmental protection, structural monitoring, health care, disaster management, distributed computing, and many others. They are comprised by small, low cust, autonomous, distributed and collaborative nodes, which can acquire, process and transmit sensorial data by means of a wirelles communication mode. One or more base stations (sink nodes) serve as final destination of data transactions.One of the main challenges of a wireless sensor network is how to improve its life span, which is limited by power consumption of network nodes. The objective of this project is to study algorithms to optimize the coverage and to ensure the connectivity of nodes in ad hoc sensor networks in its distribution, based on energy models. For that, Swarm Intelligence algorithms will be evaluated in the process of coverage optimization, by determining the best positions of the sink nodes in the cover area of the wireless sensor network.
