Abstract

Objects of this PhD project are the actions of cultural exchange established by the Office of National Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN) with other American agencies involved with safeguarding and preserving heritage between 1947 e 1976, in order to understand how different preservationists cultures were in contact and by which mediation agents. Our main hypothesis is that there was a significant number of exchanges in the field of preservation of cultural heritage of whom attended the IPHAN who acquired dynamic, diverse expression and strength, during the proposed period, as a result of diffusion of preservation theories and experiments and global processes, but also as a result of national and continental projects that exceeded this organ, in which were inserted characters with specific interests. We will study ideas, words, written and physical interventions in the cultural heritage that were performed in those contacts. The monuments and documents are considered witnesses we intend to interrogate with competence.
