Social housing and megacities: the case of Mumbai

Abstract

Cities now house more than half the world population. This led to the agglomeration phenomenon known megacity, a redevelopment of urban space developed mainly by the economic changes, which impacts in different ways in various parts of the world. Developing countries, most of them have a consequent urbanization of the challenges faced in everyday life, as the issue of land ownership, the dichotomy of urban-rural social structure phallic, food shortage and / or water, poor mobility, natural disasters, among other factors, combined with rapid growth and poor planning lead to a social imbalance scary. India, the second most populous country in the world, is a sample of this reality, and the issue of housing has long been a major problem for the country. Mumbai has a formal housing deficit and a large number of autoconstruções, ie a patch of slums. And the government adopts the mitigation measures housing programs in areas of social concern. Thus, the research project aims to study the case of two housing projects within the context of the recent urbanization of megacities. Its content adds to other studies of the megacities of the "BRICs" under development at the Laboratory for Research on Contemporary Architecture (LEAC), Universidade Estadual de Campinas. (AU)
