Abstract

The gradual loss present in most patients with cancer can be partly attributed to changes in resting energy expenditure. The hypermetabolism of these patients can significantly contribute to a negative energy balance. Furthermore, studies have suggested that cancer patients have alterations in the metabolism of macronutrients. To describe and compare the nutritional status, resting energy expenditure and substrate oxidation in patients with acute leukemia, before and after the first cycle of chemotherapy and in healthy volunteers. Nutritional assessment will be used to record three-day food, anthropometric data (weight, height, BMI) and body composition by bioelectrical impedance. Indirect calorimetry analysis and nitrogen excreted in 24 hours will be used to evaluation of resting energy expenditure and substrate utilization. Results are expressed as mean and standard deviation. Analysis of the differences within and between groups (control and chemotherapy) is made by nonparametric test. (AU)
