Proposition of a method of motion analysis of tennis players for broadcast videos

Abstract

This paper proposes a methodology for motion analysis of players applied to tennis from television images. The calibration of cameras will be designed using algorithms based on detection of visual rhythm and straight lines and ellipses, which are guided into specific mathematical models, such as the Hough transform. The algorithm is developed to identify and select only rallies sequences in television broadcasts, through the use of the mathematical model DCT (Discrete Cosine Transformation). From the selection of pictures relating to the dispute of the game, each frame will be calibrated according to the movement of the camera, based on the two-dimensional coordinates of the intersections of the court lines. The development of the calibration algorithm will be done through scripts in Matlab for initial validation, through identification of lines of a tennis court in random frames. From the game sequences identified, will be a automatic tracking of a tennis match using the dynamic calibration. To validate the method proposed tests will be performed on the accuracy of measurements to calibrate the measurements of actual lines of the court. It is expected from the proposed model to obtain levels of accuracy similar to the kinematic analysis methods that employ fixed cameras. (AU)
