Abstract

It is well known that exclusion responding occurs robustly among different populations. However, the relation between unknown stimuli (usually between names and objects) does not seem to be learned through a single exclusion trial. This study proposes the verification of how many exclusion trials are in fact needed for positive learning outcomes of auditory-visual relations between new stimuli (names and objects created by the researchers). The study will be conducted with six children (four to eight years old). The materials used will consist in familiar objects, new objects, and opaque boxes that will be used as neutral stimuli. The researcher will dictate a word and the child will grab or touch one of the available objects. Correct responses will be differentially reinforced. Two new objects will be introduced trough two blocks of auditory-visual conditional discriminations (fase 3). Each block will contain eight baseline trials and two exclusion trials, allowing each object to be presented twice. Next, probe trials will be conducted in order to evaluate learning outcomes of the two new auditory-visual relations (fase 4). If positive learning outcomes are not observed, fase 3 will be repeated and a new assessment will be done (fase 4). The criteria for concluding learning assessment will be the observation of positive learning outcomes or the repetition for ten times of fases 3 and 4. Fases 3 and 4 will be replicated twice with two pairs of new stimuli (what means that each child will be presented to six new pairs of stimuli at the end of this study). The data analysis will be based in the quantification of the number of exclusion trials needed for positive learning outcomes of auditory-visual relations by each child. It is understood that this study has important implications for both basic and applied research areas. (AU)
