Abstract

Over the past three years, the piezoelectret transducers base Teflon® FEP films as thermo-formed as cold formed have shown significant progress, and could compete on price and functionality with ceramic and crystals transducers. Technologically, they are still in the industrial prototype phase, but it can be adapted for field applications. Because present high piezoelectric coefficients, often exceeding 300 pC/N and cut off frequencies around 100 kHz, these transducers are excellent candidates for fabrication of dedicated sensors for acoustic monitoring of electrical discharges that occur into power transformers, particularly those for power distribution. Added to these features its flexibility, low cost and ability to be built in large sizes. This research aims to build and characterize these new acoustic sensors. (AU)
