Abstract

Air pollution can be defined as the presence of foreign substances into the atmosphere in sufficient concentrations to interfere directly or indirectly on the health, safety and welfare of living beings. The main pollutants are particulate matter (PM10), ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Systemic arterial hypertension is cardiovascular disease, the most frequent and also the main risk factor for the most common complications such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and terminal chronic renal disease. With this diagnostic criterion, the prevalence in the adult urban population in Brazil range from 22.3% to 43.9%. It will be an ecological study with data on admissions for HA (ICD10th - I15 to I10) obtained DATASUS portal for residents in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. The study period is between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009. The pollutants will be studied as PM10, SO2 and O3 quantified by CETESB Sao Jose dos Campos, in addition to information about minimum temperatures, and average and maximum relative humidity. Models will be built with a single pollutant, and the three pollutants simultaneously. Will develop a generalized linear model for Poisson regression using Stata v 9. It will consider the percentage increase in risk (AUM) for admission by the second HA interquartile difference (CIL) in accordance with the expression AUM (%) = (CIL expcoef * - 1). Will be considered lags of zero to seven days. (AU)
