Oceanic productivity variations during late holocene in the middle shelf of Cananeia, state of São Paulo

Abstract

This project consists of a study on the oceanic productivity variations in the region of Cananeia (SP) in the last 1500 years. Micropaleontological techniques will be applied (analysis of benthic foraminifera) for the understanding of environmental conditions such as oxygen availability and trophic conditions of the environment, and thus estimate the variability of the conditions of oceanic productivity in the last 1500 years. The material to be analyzed consists of a core collected in the middle shelf near Cananeia region, in the depth of 89 meters and with recovery of 410 cm in length. The core was collected under the research project "Variações Holocênicas na Paleoprodutividade da Plataforma Continental Sudeste do Brasil"(FAPESP. Proc. No. 03/10740-0) and has been also used in the projects "Mudanças na Produtividade e na Circulação Oceânica na Margem Continental Sul-Sudeste Brasileira durante o Holoceno: Evidências Micropaleontológicas e Geoquímicas" (FAPESP. Proc. No. 07/54657-0) and "Variações na produtividade da plataforma continental sul-sudeste do Brasil, no Holoceno Médio e Tardio: Uma abordagem "multiproxy""(FAPESP Proc. no. 09/01594-6). Thus, some of the data generated in these projects (grain size, age model, organic carbon and calcium carbonate content and carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios) will be used together with the results being generated in this project to obtain a better interpretation paleoproductivity of the region.
