Popular housing project as modern city project: the housing of IAP in great São Paulo from 1930 to 1964

Abstract

This research project proposes the analysis of specimens of IAP - Institutes of Retirement and Pensions’ housing, built between the years 1930 and 1964 in Greater Sao Paulo, as public housing projects as well as projects of the city. Created from 1933 with the primary purpose of providing retirement benefits and medical care to employees, the IAP was responsible, until its demise in 1964, for much of the housing production in the country. These houses were produced by engaged professionals, incorporating an understanding of a "new live" urban, were able to create housing projects that were part of a whole new vision of the city, the modern city. Much of the residential complexes of IAP were built in established areas, sometimes central, or in the process of consolidation. So, they settled in a unique way in the cities where they were deployed, for example, the Greater São Paulo, to the extent that allowed its residents easy access to shops, services, and also to their workplaces. From the study of the insertion of the IAP housing in urban areas and the type of relationship established between this and those that were prototypes of the modern city, as it was still analyzing the progression of that relationship, you can understand what their influence on the structure of the town of Sao Paulo and on housing estates built later.
