Introduction: given the current epidemiological situation in Brazil, income inequality presents itself as one of the factors contributing to the deterioration of the health situation of the population. The Conditional Cash Transfer Programs (CCTP) have the potential to contribute to the reduction of this scenario. Objectives: to characterize the food acquisition of low-income families beneficiaries of CCTP. To evaluate the influence of Bolsa Família Program on household food availability in 2008 in low-income families in Brazil. Methods: data from the Household Food Budget Survey conducted by IBGE between May 19 2008 and May 31, 2009 in a probabilistic sample of 55,970 households will be used. We will analyze the records of purchases of food and beverages for household consumption recorded by the residents of households for seven consecutive days. Aggregates of households, whether or not beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família Program, will be used as the unit of study. Records of food purchased, after converted to energy, will be gathered in groups: cereals, pulses, cassava flour, roots and tubers, meats, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, oils and fats, sugars, processed foods, and other foods. To assess if the participation in CCTP affects household food acquisition will be performed multiple linear regression models taking as dependent variable the difference between the acquisition of calories per capita between groups of households (intervention or control). As adjustment variables will be used the geographic distribution, monthly income per capita, the average schooling of adults and the percentage of total expenditure on food made outside the home.
