Psychometric study of the Computerized Battery of Oral Language (v3): correlation between vocabulary and intelligence

Abstract

The evaluation and early detection of oral language disorders allow the effective introduction of intervention procedures, decreasing the incidence or the severity of the literacy problems. Therefore, it is considered important the development of instruments with validity, reliability and norm-referenced test interpretation in order to evaluate the oral language in kindergarten and the early grades of elementary school. Beside this, it is considered that the computerized tests increment the evaluative techniques, so they allow the measurement and the testing of cognitive skills that wouldn´t be possible using the pencil-and-paper types of tests. This way, the present study aims to evaluate the receptive oral language comprehension, searching for evidences of validity to the Computerized Battery of Oral Language version 3(BILOv3), using the correlation between the performance in vocabulary, measured by the Computerized Vocabulary for Image Peabody Test(TVIP), and the intellectual development, measured by the Coloured Progressive Matrices of Raven. There will be 200 students taking part of both genders aging between five and ten years old, that are finishing kindergarten or attending first through fifth grade in elementary school, all of which are in public and private schools of the State of São Paulo. The testing will take place in three sessions, one for each instrument, in consecutive days. The data analysis will occur by descriptive statistics of each tests, analyzing as well if the multiple variables (age, grade, gender and type of school) reveal relative discrepancies to the average performance of the participants in the BILOv3. There will also be a correlation analysis between the three instruments using the Pearson Correlation Test.
