Abstract

"BIOACTIVITY, CHEMICAL AND MICROBIAL DIVERSITY IN ALTERNANTHERA SPECIES". The aim of this project, proposed for the PhD degree of Marília Almeida Trapp, is to study the plants Alternanthera brasiliana and Alternanthera dentata. These plants are widely used by Brazilian people as a folk medicine for the treatment of numerous diseases. However, there are no studies regarding bioactive compounds present in these plants. Herein, we are proposing to study secondary metabolites of both plants and endophytic microorganisms, in attempt to correlate these compounds with plant´s biological activities. High throughput screening methods, which involve analytical techniques such as GC-MS, LC-MS, LC- NMR, and biological tests, will be employed for a rapid identification of biologically-active secondary metabolites and in order to verify if theses metabolites are involved in plant-microbe interactions.
