Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of the acupuncture and the electroacupuncture on the treatment of the upper trapezius myofascial pain. Sexty volunteers aged between 18 and 40 years old, body index mass between 18 and 24kg/m2, regular menstrual cycle, presenting at least one trigger point at the upper trapezius and local or referred pain for more than 6 months. Subjects will be randomized in 3 groups: acupuncture, electroacupuncture an placebo. Volunteers and the examinator are going to be blinded about the volunteers allocation. Nine sessions, two per week, are going to be scheduled. The needles will be inserted at the acupoints VB20, VB21, F3, IG4 and in maximum more 2 "ashi" points in each muscle. A mixed current, alternating 2 and 100 hz each five seconds is going to be applied at the electroacupuncture group for 30 minutes. The acupuncture group will have the neddles connected to the equipment but it is going to be maintained turned off during the whole session. The placebo group is going to receive also the same procedures as the acupuncture group except that the needles are going to be inserted from 5 to 10mm away from the correct location. The effectiveness of the treatments is going to be evaluated concerning the intensity of pain, the pain pressure threshold, the cervical range of movement, the stress, quality of life and the ultrasound image of the trigger point. Influencing factor and the menstrual cycle phases are going to be monitored. Data is going to be analyzed concerning normality and simetry. At the intragroup evaluation and between 2 session, data with normal distribution are going to be analyzed by t test for pared data and data that eventually does not present normal distribution are going to be analyzed by Wilcoxon test. To analyze effect between all session Friedman test or ANOVA with repeted measures are going to be used. Data that eventually does not present simetric distribution are going to be evaluated by the sinal test. To the intergroups comparison is going to be used ANOVA ou Kruskal Wallis, acordingh to the data distribution. Regression models are going to be applied to verify the tendency of the variables. The significance level is going to be fixed as ±=0,05.
