Abstract

The research that we propose analyzes the Santa Rita do Turvo, situated in the Zona da Mata Mineira, in the second half of the nineteenth century. Characterized by 1850, as a region inhabited by farmers of simple life, production of gender-oriented self-consumption, reduced pattern of ownership of slaves and reduced accumulation of wealth, the town suffered significant promotion of its key economic, demographic and social factors. This change was mainly due to its proximity to the bustling area of coffee production in Minas Gerais, mainly developed since the second half nineteenth century, a condition which now provides commercial links between Santa Rita do Turvo and coffee region. Our goals are to study the composition and distribution of goods that made up the wealth of the inhabitants of the region, the concentration levels and accumulation of wealth, the world of work and production, consumption patterns and habits, the technical process of production, demographic changes of location and comparative analysis with other regions of Minas Gerais. As a result, and together, the study of the objectives set out above will provide the knowledge economy and society of the locality concerned, to accentuate the dynamic by which it passed in this period. The corpus of documents that we focus on the research lies in the Forum of Viçosa, MG, and thus becomes a relevant set of 419 postmortem inventories, which cover the entire second half of the nineteenth century and the processes of division of land . The lists of named inhabitants of Minas Gerais and the General Census of the Empire, the territory that mining was conducted in 1873, will also be consulted sources, as providing important demographic data about the location in question.
