Abstract

This project involves three different studies to evaluate alternative strategies to improve efficiency of genomic selection in animal breeding programs. The first study will be developed to assess feasibility of using dimension reduction methods to predict genetic merit of animals based on information of genome-wide dense molecular markers, as a computationally efficient alternative that could allow genotyping animals at lower cost. Different scenario will be simulated to investigate influence of underlying QTL distribution and marker density on accuracy of prediction methods. The aim of second study will be to compare predictive ability of methods investigated in first study when using data from a real population of mice, comprising records of three traits with heritabilities of different strength. A third study will be carried out to assess long-term consequences of genomic selection in a simulated population, by measuring genetic gain and inbreeding incidence and comparing these figures with those obtained by conventional selection (based on BLUP).
