Abstract

Billings dam, located in Sao Paulo greater area, Brazil, the dam has multiple usage such as: water supply, electric generation, predatory fishing and leisure. Although considered an area of environmental protection, last few years the dam has suffered lots of environment aggression including: toxic metals presence in the environment, mercury contamination in the Rio Grande, one of the main tributaries of the dam, attributed to discharges of effluent by Solvay-Indupa company. The quality of the dam is also impaired during times of flooding, in which the excess water from the Tietê and Pinheiros is pumped into the dam. Over the years, numerous studies have shown an increased concentration of metals on water level, sediment level and biological level. Data referring the metal concentration in the fish from Billings dam have not been updated so far. The cause and effect relation of pumping polluted water directly into Billings regarding the fish quality has never been researched. It's a disturbing picture considering that in its vicinity, there are different types of settlements, including the families of fishermen who uses the water for supply and mainly fishing as their main source of food and subsistence. In this scenario, this study aims to evaluate the presence of metallic elements on fish tissues in the area as well the relation between pumping water from Tiete-Pinheiros river to the dam; analise in temporal level. The data generated in this study will be compared with the existing national and international laws and will give basis for future management actions and remediation of water quality and fish consumption.
