This work is part of the research project developed by the Department of Geography, University of São Paulo (USP) in the elbow of the Paraíba do Sul, located in the municipality of Guararema in the State of Sao Paulo. This project aims to promote new knowledge about the old connections and the subsequent separation of the drainages of the Rio Tietê and Paraíba do Sul, on the understanding of the process of river capture the medium course of Paraíba do Sul. In the region of Guararema, whose sediments belong Formation Sao Paulo, it may have been the capture of a tributary of the High Tietê by Middle Paraíba do Sul, forming an elbow. The great river plains of both basins have similar meandrine belts, and have happened in a system of hills of sedimentary basins magazine plateau corresponding to the basin of São Paulo and Taubaté Basin. The embedding of the Paraiba do Sul may have caused the Tietê deepen its bed, slowly and having undergone tectonic interference that deepened the crystalline floor where she sat. For this it is necessary rebuild the history of regional drainage and thus interpret the geological history and geomorphology in order to assist in the interpretation and genesis of the elbow in the Middle Valley of the Paraíba do Sul River. By means of computational techniques and processed photointerpretation geomorphological in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to seek the relationship between the old connections and the likely separation of the tributaries that followed in the two basins with the help of field work. Reviewing the geologic past of the two drains is expected to obtain convincing hypotheses about the readjustment of the regional drainage network.
