Abstract

The search for alternative therapies for the treatment of Chagas disease is very important, since currently there are only two drugs available, benznidazole and nifurtimox. Both of them have considerable adverse effects, and only benznidazole is used in Brazil. In addition, these drugs are ineffective in the chronic phase. The need to search for new alternatives to combat Chagas disease is evident and nitro-heterocyclic derivatives with activity against Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease, are a very viable alternative for studies of new lead-compound. A strategy for identification of promising new compounds is the molecular modification of drugs wich are available for therapy, aiming to improve pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic aspects. In this context, this study proposes the design, synthesis, identification and evaluation of biological activity of furfuryliden derivatives against T. cruzi. The results of the synthesized compounds activity against epimastigotes forms of T. cruzi will applied to study the structure-activity relationships in order to verify the influence of physicochemical properties that most influence on biological activity.
