We want to investigate stellar populations and galaxy evolution in high redshifts through the technique of empirical population synthesis.We shall develop an adaptation for low resolution spectra of the STARLIGHT code, as well as apply statistical procedures to look for spectral basessuited for the description of this kind of spectrum. Initially we will consider spectral samples extracted from the SDSS survey (for low redshift) and from the COSMOS and GOODS/VIRMOS surveys (for high redshiftgalaxies). We will also examine the application of this technique to the J-PAS survey, what will allow to study the evolution of the stellarpopulations of millions of galaxies up to $z \sim 1$.
