Abstract The goal of this project is to propose an inquiry into the concept of History in school textbooks of Imperial Brazil. In doing so, we shall analyze books by canon Joaquim Caetano Fernandes Pinheiro (1825-1876) whose success abroad editorial market allowed them to play an important role in the late nineteenth-century education. Fernandes Pinheiro"s books point out a narrative guided by the sacred time of Creation by recognizing facts, dates and "great men" as the main structure of historical writing. Therefore, this research - also based on provincial reports published annually by provinces - will make possible a discussion over the dissemination of books as well as an analysis regarding the structural aspects of the making of a school knowledge based on the formation of a school culture centered on the literacy culture.
