Abstract

Encompassed by concerns about the quality of education in schools and the factors influencing it from the understanding of the correlated variables, this doctorate work aims to look at the scholar phenomena from investigating the relationship between students' performance and social environment (family and neighborhood), targeting to fathom how different performances are related to the extern aspects in the view of the subjects involved. In dialogue with works in the field of education sociology, and more specifically, with others in educational assessment and analysis of school organization, we observed four schools in Campinas-São Paulo (Brazil) seeking to understand their relationship to their social neighborhood, with two of these schools presenting the same performance level but located in different areas of social vulnerability, and the other two showing different performance but situated in the same zone of social vulnerability.
