Bromeliads are ornamental tropical plants with a high diversity of colors and morphologies which make them highly attractive. In hybrid development programs the compatibility among genotypes is fundamental, however, there are methods to overcome compatibility barriers, when they are present. Floral biology studies may help to define the degree of compability between genotypes and possible fertilization barriers, when new genotype combinations are aimed for the ornamental market. The possibility of creating new variability brings not only more options for the market but may also help to discourage extrativism of species classified as vulnerable or under risk of extinction. Of great applicability is the detailed study of the flower development and biology, such as pollination, pollen grain viability and germination, anatomical characteristics of the ovary, fertilization throughmorpho-anatomical studies. In breeding programs, another important aspect is the genotype conservation, thus, the pollen grain storage with the maintainence of its viability will allow crosses between genotypes with flowering time differences. Studies on stigma receptivity, pollen grain viability, flowering time differences will all affect the conservation of genetic resources and the possibility of artificially conserving pollen grains may circumvent some of the biological barriers. This project aims to study the flower biology and the reproductive biology in bromeliads, as well as pollen cryopreservation and interespecific and intergeneric crosses aiming to gain knowledge and obtain new genetic material of interest for the market in these important family. To reach this objective, studies on the reproductive development of important ornamental species, using microscopical and biotechnologies, as well as interespecific and intergeneric crosses aiming at new genetic options for floriculture and landscaping and genetic conservation of bromeliads.
