Abstract

This research entitled "The teaching of art in the public schools of Presidente Prudente: policy guidance and teaching" has as objective the preparation of an analysis of the current situation of art education in public schools in Presidente Prudente, in relation to the action of the teacher in the classroom. Throughout history art has been an important way to transform reality besides a great help in social and historical record of humanity. The school is one of possible places of training and access to cultural knowledge and it can, through the teaching of art, contribute in fundamental ways for the formation of citizenship and democratic consciousness. In Brazil, the teaching of art had suffered huge political influences through history, and it has remained outside the curriculum because of practices adopted by teachers from the 50's, when the excess of freedom, lack of content and objectives devalued its presence, generating discredited by other educators.The new Law of Directives and Bases 9394/96 has established Art as obligatory curriculum component and member of basic training of the citizen but its application has been made in different ways in different education systems.The main purpose is to examine educational policies regarding to the teaching of art in public schools from 1st to 5th year of Presidente Prudente and relate them to the action of the teacher in the classroom.The research will be done with teachers in early grades of primary school in municipal schools of Presidente Prudente, in three different schools, chosen randomly according to availability and acceptance of them. It will be used a questionnaire containing structured questions and following a quantitative-interpretative analysis with the aid of statistical software SPSS for Windows, there will be a semi-structured interviews with a smaller group of teachers in order to obtain a qualitative analysis of expectations for the teaching of art discipline and as well as the difficulties faced by them.According the anticipated schedule, the research should begin in March 2010 lasting 24 months.
