Abstract

Mansonic schistosomiasis is a cronic and debilitant disease. In Brazil is estimated from 8 to 10 million infected people. Treatment is based in chemotherapy using praziquantel. Unfortunately, the excessive and inappropriate use of this drug has culminated in parasite resistance and worry about disease control, and the development of new alternatives is being requested, and to solve these problems medicinal plants are being used and tested against many parasitosis. Recent studies made by our research group with Phyllanthus amarus L. (Quebra-pedra), using hexanic and ethanolic extracts and a fraction of hexanic extract enriched with lignans against Schistosoma mansoni BH strain have shown promissory activities to combat helminthiasis. P. amarus has been selected to be tested based on studies comproving its anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective activities, important actions to control the disease, once the main morbidity cause of schistosomiasis is the inflammatory reaction that occurs around S. mansoni eggs (granulomas), specially in liver. Satisfactory results found in previous realized researches led us to the development of a detailed study using the extract which had shown the best performance on analyzed parameters (ethanolic extract), to identify the active compounds responsible to combat S. mansoni. In this study in vitro and in vivo tests will be realized, and some parameters will be analyzed, such as: number of worms, oviposition, oogram, scanning electron microscopy and liver histology.
