Development and validation of a subjective evaluation of the criteria for frailty in old age advanced

Abstract

The frailty of the elderly has emerged as an important concept in geriatrics and gerontology and can be understood as a syndrome that leads to the occurrence of adverse events as falls, disability, hospitalization and death. This study is part of the SABE Study - Health, Welfare and Aging whose goals are to develop an instrument for subjective assessment regarding the early identification of frailty, apply the instrument in the elderly population of the municipality of Sao Paulo in monitoring the SABE study and validate the instrument comparing it with a "gold standard". Will be assessed for people 75 years and over that in 2006, does not fit the criteria of frailty proposed (involuntary loss of weight, self-report of exhaustion / fatigue, decreased walking speed and decreased activity). Also use data from two interviews in 2008 (visit and telephone) looking, first, to identify objectively the pre-frail elderly and frail, and second, validate the subjective data collected. The validation of subjective instrument shall be verified by its correlation with the objective data obtained at a significance level of 5% and for analysis of indicators, apply a multivariate analysis. This study will enable to design a simple tool that can identify vulnerable older people and / or potential in this condition.
