Nutritional and epidemiological profile of patients with chronic kidney disease of an University Hospital screening

Abstract

The chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by slow, progressive and irreversible loss of renal functions. The nutritional and metabolic changes are strongly associated with the resulting increase in morbidity and mortality. The late referral (LR) of patients with CKD to specialized services is common and has major consequences as the increased morbidity and mortality, treatment costs, and worsening of life quality. Considering the nutritional status as an important prognostic factor of CKD development and the lack of information on patients at the time of referral to nephrology services, this study aims to determine the nutritional and epidemiological profile of these patients. This cross sectional study will be conducted with subjects with CKD aged over 18 years, referred to the outpatients emergency care, nephrology general and uremia of the Nephrology Service of an University Hospital. Protocols will be used for general assessment (clinical and socio-demographics) and nutritional assessment (anthropometric data, biochemical and food consumption). The study aims to provide information that may be useful in drawing up proposals to improve the nutritional care to patients with CKD.
