The need to reduce energy consumption of buildings is contributing to increase the demand for passive conditioning strategies, instead of the use of mechanical systems. One of the main strategies of passive cooling is natural ventilation, which can occur by the action of direct wind (cross ventilation) and by temperature and pressure differences between openings (stack effect). The last alternative is more efficient in situations where there is no external wind, often found in the urban fabric, for instance, where obstacles can block the wind. The main objective of this research is to evaluate the potential application of solar chimneys to promote natural ventilation in low rise buildings located in different Brazilian bioclimatic zones. We will build two models and measure the climatic data. One consists in a conventional vertical chimney and the other a solar chimney of varying tilt. Data obtained in experimental measurements will be compared with computer simulations using the softwares Ecotect and EnergyPlus. The computer model will be checked and simulated for representative cities of the eight Brazilian bioclimatic zones and the thermal comfort potential provided by the solar chimney will be analyzed for typical climates of Brazil.
