Research in relation to the school environment is focused mainly on teaching methods, environmental comfort and learning productivity. In many countries, the design process receives support of organizations to insure an appropriate school environment. This support comes in the form of: publications, guide-lines, case studies, recent findings and evaluation tools to improve the school design process. In the last decade, school buildings in the State of São Paulo are supervised by FDE - a School Development Foundation. The design process is based on a fixed Architectural Program and a list of prefabricated construction elements. The results of such a process are designs, which not always present the best comfort conditions and often do no respond to real user needs. This study aims to increase the quality of the design process of school buildings in the State of São Paulo. The actual process will be characterized, recent school building designs of FDE will be evaluated through the application of tools found in the literature. These evaluations will provide the basis for a specific school building design evaluation method and the structuring of an area of support for the design process. This support is seen as containing codes, case studies and results of school building research, and the relation of school environments and learning productivity as well as evaluation tools. This research project will be based primarily on data related to FDE, since school building design in the State of São Paulo and in Brazil as a whole is similar in content and form. Due to this similarity the results obtained through this study can be transferred to other situation in Brazil. The study is part of a larger research project developed within the department of architecture and building of the School of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Urban Design. The results of this research project are seen as contributing towards the introduction of a new school building design process which should improve the quality of school architecture.
