The current development of bone-substitute materials with potentiality to promote the complete closing of a critical-size bone defect has motivated discussion for its biological performance. The biocompatibilities and resorption speed of the bioactive calcium phosphates based hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) alone are different from the mixture of both (HA/TCP materials). The objective of the present work is to evaluate histomorphometrically the osteoconductive potential of three bioactive ceramics grafting materials (HA, TCP and HA/TCP) in microgranules and compared with autogenous graft. Eighty rats divided in four groups of 20 animals each will be used. A bone defect of 8 mm of diameter will be created in the parietal bones of each animal. The defects will be treated with: group I - HA, group II - TCP, group III - HA/TCP and group IV – autogenous bone. A new lot of 5 animals will be used for the calculation initial volume of the bone defect. The following morphometric parameters will be evaluated: a) absolute volume of new bone tissue and b) absolute volume of biomaterial. After linear regression adjusting of these data, the following kinetic parameters will be calculated for each group: a) bone deposition speed and b) biomaterial resorption speed. The histomorphometric data and kinetic parameters obtained will be compared statistically between treatments by ANOVA.
