In science classes: discussion of scientific controversies at television

Abstract

As we believe that television is an important way of reading about science & technology for science students, we propose to investigate which reading effects a work in science classrooms that explicit aspects of the production conditions of the television discourses would unleash in students imaginaries about television, science and technology. For that, we propose two case studies that integrate the construction and application of teaching plans that exposes scientific controversies of great media repercussion. The chosen themes are Climate Changes and Evolution. And they will be worked in geography and biology classes, respectively, in two schools of the state of São Paulo. We understand that the introduction and discussion of television discourses about those themes in a formal environment of education may contribute to the enlargement and dislocations of meanings about science and technology and about the different ways of traffic of knowledge, specially, the television. This research relies on discursive studies, mainly, in the works of Michel Pêcheux and Eni P. Orlandi, and they arguments about the relations between language and discursive materiality, of historical nature. The most important hypothesis of this work is that the vehicles of the discourses influence the meanings of the discourses. More specifically, we believe that there are lots of ways of meanings circulation about science and technology and the school should play its role of questioning them, and itself, contributing for the development of critical citizens of these discourses.
