Abstract

Many athletes perform both strength and endurance training simultaneously. This training routine is called concurrent training (CT). However, this type of training produces an “interference effect” phenomenon, which decreases strength gains. An appealing way to provide explanations for the interference effect during CT would be to analyze different levels of the adaptative process. A possible candidate would be to analyze adaptations at the muscle level. Muscle components (e.g sarcoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and mypfibrils) seem to compete for space within the muscle fiber. In addition, pathways activation seems to respond differently to strength training (ST) and to endurance training (END). Animal studies have provided evidence that ST and END result in a selective activation of molecular pathways. Phosphorylated protein kinases (AMPK) during END leads to the inactivation of another kinase (AKT), which may decrease protein synthesis and strength adaptations. Thus, the purpose of this study will be to investigat the morphologic adaptations in the myofibrils, sarcoplasmatic reticulum and mitochondria and with the expression of kinases that regulate CT adaptations.
