The aim of this research is to study of beta titanium alloys including betagenic elements for using in orthopedic implants. This study is part of a thematic project of research supported by FAPESP (03/09849-7). The combination of properties, such as low density, high mechanical strength, excellent fatigue resistance, good cryogenic properties, good corrosion resistance and great biocompatibility makes these titanium alloys appropriated for applications as implants. However, the use of pure titanium, due to its mechanical properties, is applicated where mechanical requests are limited, as in the case of dental implants. When if it deals with orthopedics implants, that are submitted to high levels of mechanical properties lead to the application of the titanium alloys. Addition of other elements to titanium allows in order to modify its equilibrium phases, changing significantly its properties. The present work deals with the obtaining, processing, microstructural and mechanics characterization of Ti-Nb alloys with Sn additions. The proposed work is a sequence of research developed during the master degree of the candidate, where the main objective was the analysis of metastability of Ti-Nb alloys. In this new step, our pourpose is the development of titanium alloys for the production of orthopedic implants.
