In the last years, the Brazilian energy policy has directed efforts to increase the natural gas participation in the national energy matrix. Gas chromatography is the reference method used to determinate this fuel chemical composition, which is direct related with the quality parameters. Although it shows good precision and accuracy, the gas chromatographs have difficulties to be connected to the production line and even in the development of portable instruments.An increasing use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) has recently been observed due to its advantages compared with other analytical techniques such as speed in data collection and instrumentation robustness, allowing the construction of simple equipment to collect spectra in field.In this work, spectroscopic parameters will be defined for the construction of a NIR photometer dedicated to determine the main hydrocarbons in natural gas as a fast and cheap alternative for the analysis of this fuel. By using the spectral data and chemometrics, the wavelengths (variables) containing information of each hydrocarbon will be choosen and a spectroscopic sample cell will be constructed for gases analysis, evaluating the path length, the inside volume and the easiness of cleaning.
