Abstract

The world's population expands rapidly and will reach 8,5 billion people in 2030, compared to 7.3 billion today, due to improvements in public health and reduction of child mortality. With such a significant growth of the world population, food supply becomes vital. Agriculture plays a vital role in providing food in society and the economy; however, monitoring soil nutrients for good production is indispensable and essential. The development of a paper-based platform for simultaneous nutrient determination associated with the use of portable detectors capable of transmitting digital information over existing communication channels provides an integrated approach for detection in remote regions. The primary interest in paper-based microfluidic devices is due to their portability, biodegradability, low-weight, low-cost and simplicity. The use of simple colorimetric reactions enables its development and application in the industrial, environmental, and agricultural areas. The data once collected can be employed in the modeling of the spatial distribution of nutrients in the territory under study and later correction through the use of geostatistics. Due to the relevance of agriculture, this project aims to develop a low-cost platform focused on the determination of phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, potassium, borate, iron, manganese, cobalt, copper, and zinc in the soil.
