Population-based assessment of breast cancer screening, diagnosis and death in the city of Campinas, as a function of age

Abstract

Evidence on the benefit of screening in women younger than 50 years is controversial. It is interesting to know if these women are being benefited through the improvement of morbimortality indicators in a population that extensively practices the opportunistic screening in this age group. To this end, a population-based study will be carried out to evaluate the age and the morbimortality of breast cancer in women in the city of Campinas, as a function of age and time of screening, stage to the diagnosis, incidence, survival and mortality from breast cancer. The population to be studied will be the women living in the municipality of Campinas. This will be a mixed time series study and retrospective cohort with evaluation of secondary data. The Breast Cancer Information System (SISMAMA), the Mortality Information System (SIM), the Hospital Cancer Registry (RHC) and the Population-Based Cancer Registry will be instruments of data collection. For statistical analysis, analysis of variance, trend analysis or repeated measures, diagnostic tests, adjusted relative risk and adjusted prevalence ratio with 95% confidence interval will be used. Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test will be used for survival analyzes. It is hoped that the results of this study may contribute to the orientation of strategies aimed at controlling the impact that the appearance of this neoplasm has on the health system and to the lives of these women and their families.
