Study and development of control and drive techniques for the use of switched reluctance machines in electric vehicles.

Abstract

The Switched Reluctance Machine (SRM) has been pointed as an interestingalternative for electric vehicles applications. This regard results mainlyfrom some inherent characteristics of SRMs, which allow wide speed rangeoperation, low manufacturing cost, reduced weight/power factor when compared toother machines, and the absence of rare materials in the structure. Thepredominant drawbacks for the usage of SRMs in electric vehicles industry applicationsare the torque ripple, acoustic noise and robust control requirement for widespeed range operation. Regarding the mentioned circumstances, this researchproject aims to study and develop a system that enables the use of SRMs inelectric vehicles applications. The main objective is to deploy a completeSRM drive system through the proposal of torque ripple mitigation techniques, torque and speed controllers, electronic converter and energy/battery managementsystem. Furthermore, optimization methods for efficiency and wide speed rangeoperation are also within the scope of the project. (AU)
