Impact of Emerging Pollutants in Health: a Study on Biomimetic Membranes


Contaminated water is considered a major cause of diseases in human being and animals. Currently, so-called emerging contaminants were highlighted in studies of water analyzes for consumption worldwide. These contaminants are a class of compounds comprising pharmaceuticals, personal care products, industrial products, natural and synthetic hormones, illegal drugs, pesticides, nanomaterials, among others. The World Health Organization admits that there is a knowledge gap considering the risks associated with exposure to low drug concentrations in the long term. In particular, a need exists to study the "cocktail" and "additive" effects, i.e., how different drugs or other emerging contaminants may interact each other to produce adverse effects. In this context, the development of this Regular Research project has as main objective to elucidate the processes occurring in biomimetic membranes (mimetic models of cell membranes) due to the exposure to emerging pollutants. The Langmuir and giant unilamellar vesicles techniques are used to mimic the biological membrane in the absence and presence of emerging pollutants. The reflection and absorption spectroscopy in the infrared polarization modulation (PM-IRRAS) and confocal fluorescence microscopy will be used as principal tools to obtain chemical and morphological information of interactions at molecular level between the biomimetic membranes and emerging pollutants (AU)
