Abstract

The Jorge Lobo's disease is characterized by a chronic inflammatory process, rich in macrophages, that affects exclusively cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue. It is caused by the fungus Lacazia loboi, whose habitat may be the soil, water or vegetation, and is generally found in the Amazon region. The disease manifests itself as nodules, tumoral or papular-keloidial lesions. The diagnosis of Jorge Lobo's disease is based mainly on clinical and histological analysis, since the fungus is difficult to culture. Considering the scarcity of information about the disease, the variability in its clinical manifestation and the resistance to the therapeutic methods already developed, this project aims to study the immunophenotypic profile of the macrophagic infiltrate in Jorge Lobo's disease. We hope that the comparison with lepromatous leprosy, an older infectious disease with a similar macrophagic infiltrate, may improve the understanding of the pathogenesis of lobomycosis, and contribute to the development of an effective therapy.
