Quark gluon tomography at the electron ion Collider

Abstract

This proposal serves to continue, extend and broaden collaborative work between research groups in the Physics Division at Argonne National Laboratory in the USA and the State of São Paulo. The proposed research activities over two years are complementary to and a natural extension of the associated FAPESP grant no. 2016/03154-7, whose principal research focus in hadron physics is the quark and gluon structure of ground and excited state the mesons and baryons (e.g. the pion and nucleon) and the experimental 12 GeV upgrade of Jefferson Lab in Virginia, USA. The focus of this SPRINT proposal is the science associated of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) in the USA, which has been identified by the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) as the number one priority for new construction for nuclear physics in the USA. It is therefore critica I that a strong theoretical program be developed that can guide the experimental program at a future EIC. Some of the most pressing contemporary issues in hadron physics and for the EIC, is the QCD-connected calculation of emergent quark-gluon properties of the nucleon, such as, parton distribution functions (PDF), transverse momentum distributions (TMDs) and generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Parametrization of these distributions is not sufficient... (AU)
